<lead><![CDATA[James Neal arrived in Pensacola on Wednesday in a pickup truck. He leaves today in a canoe.]]></lead>
<text><![CDATA[Neal expects to return sometime in 2014, paddling down the Escambia River after a three-year, 13,000-mile canoe trip for a good cause ... and a little adventure.Neal's Paddle to the Sea is to raise money for Save The Children. The nonprofit group was founded in Appalachia 75 years ago during the Great Depression to address children's needs for food, medical care and education.Neal, 67, of Fairview, Okla., starts his journey at 9 a.m. today at Beck's Fish Camp near the Escambia River. From there, he'll paddle east on the Gulf Coast with his wife, Jean, 69, following in the truck to serve as his shore support with extra gear, food and supplies.Long, wet rideThe retired Delaware state police major and sea captain said his emotions right now are a ball of excitement, nervousness and anxiety rolled up in one."That's natural when you get started," Neal said Friday from his trailer hitched to his pickup truck outside the fish camp. "By the time I'm in the canoe 10 minutes, everything will fall in place and I'll be fine."Those first 10 minutes will soon enough become the hours, days, weeks and months before Neal completes the round trip to raise money for children.A Lion's Club in Oklahoma has sponsored the first 200 miles of Neal's trip. He hopes that other clubs, organizations and people will step up to sponsor the rest of his water expedition. In a sleek, yellow 17-foot solo-deck canoe, Neal plans to paddle from Escambia County to Cedar Key, and jump from Florida to Fort Clinch on the Georgia state line. From there, it's up the East Coast to the Hudson River through Lake Champlain, the Erie Canal and the five Great Lakes. Then he turns back down the Illinois and Mississippi rivers to New Orleans and the Gulf Coast, until he's back to where he started at Beck's Fish Camp on Escambia River.A worthy effortNeal said he was inspired to make a circumnavigation through Florida after reading a biography of Verlen Kruger, one of the best-known paddlers in the world. He's recognized in the Guinness Book of Records for paddling more than 100,000 miles but died before he could take a trip through Florida.Neal wanted to do what Kruger never did, but time and weather concerns have forced his putting off his trek around Florida until a later date. The alternative was the 13,000-mile East Coast trip, which fulfills his passion for canoeing and desire to help children."This trip involves a lot of details," he said. "Even though it a major expense, it's all for a good cause."]]></text>
