<lead><![CDATA[Guam - On April 30th two canoes landed on Guam's shores. One is from Yap propper and one from an outer island of Yap known as Lamotrek, Lamb-O- Trek. Led by traditional navigators and guided by the stars these two canoes sailed hundreds of miles of open ocean to make a historic trip to Guam that hasn't been done in over 100 years.]]></lead>
<text><![CDATA[Before maps, compasses, and GPS the ancestors of all pacific islanders used traditional navigation methods to sail the seas. On April 30th two traditional 30 ft. Micronesian Canoes landed on Guam's shores carrying a total of 23 people. The crew is made up of men from Yap propper or the main island of Yap and an outer island of Yap known as Lamotrek. Lamotrek is politically under the Yapese flag but the people have a distinct culture and language. Lamotrek is one of the few remaining Carolinian islands that hold the ancient knowledge of star navigation. Ali Haleyalur is the master navigator from Lamotrek. "All these I learned from my father I learned from my uncles and other people who are in line of our relatives usually it's our elders that taught us how to do this," explained Haleyalur.Haleyalur and his companions traveled for four and half days over hundreds of miles of open ocean without any safety or chase boats. With just two canoes 23 men and the ancient knowledge that has been passed down to them for generations Haleyalur was able to navigate to Guam without ever doing it before. "Well I know the stars which Guam lies under but the very important thing is I have to take into consideration is the current and the wind although you know the star which Guam lies under you don't have to sail directly to that location first you have to know where the current is going to how the wind is then you know where to put your canoes at," he explained. They brave sailors are hear on Guam mostly because of Bruno Thargnan. He's a Yapese chief studying navigation under Haleyalur. Thargnagan heads up the Traditional Navigation Society in Yap a group that is trying to revive traditional navigation in Yap similar to Guam's TASI group.Joining them on their quest to keep traditional star navigation alive is anthropologist Dr. Eric Metzgar. Metzgar has been studying and documenting traditional micronesian navigation for nearly 33 years. He explains the signifigance of this trip and the legendary status of one of it's canoes. "Simion Hokolea was built by Mau Pialug the legendary navigator from Satawal it was built about 33 years ago....the legendary part of it is Mau Pialug sailed it to Saipan God knows how many times maybe six seven times and then he used it to sail to Palau at least two or three times and now we're using it again to make history from Lamotrek to Guam and that voyage hasn't happened in over 100 years so this is a legendary canoe," said the anthropoligist.Metzgar owns and operates triton films a company dedicated to documenting traditional methods of navigation in micronesia. You can find his work on tritonfilms.com. Do accomplish this feat of documenting their amazing ability to navigate the ocean Metzgar joins them and braves the seas with a full load of camera gear. "It can be unnerving because your in an open canoe their is no shelter to speak of and if the waves are high and the wind is bad your gonna get bad because everything is gonna be difficult," he explained. According to Metzgar there can be some pretty hairy situations out on the open seas especially when the waves begin crashing on top of the canoes making everyone and everything drenched in sea water.Haleyalur on the other hand is less nervous about these trips. When asked if traveling over 400 hundred miles of open ocean with no safety boats and just the stars as guides ever makes him scared he replied, "I'm not scared I'm not scared because I know where I am always and I know that the only thing that will kill us out there is the typhoon or maybe sharks or whales if they want to do something but I have faith that nothing...I'm not scared."While en route to Guam one of their sails tore, two guys from the Yap propper canoe jumped into the water and swam 300 feet in high surf to bring a needle to the other canoe to temporarily repair the torn sail. They'll need these repairs for their next voyage which is even more historic. They will attempt to sail from Guam to Yap propper something that as far as historians can tell has never been done.]]></text>
